The Wildscreen Arkive website has initiated a vote to find the "World's Favourite Unloved Species" from a list nominated by global conservation organisations. One of the species on their list is Felis Silvestris - the Scottish Wildcat.
****
Members wishing to show their support for the Wildcat can do so by clicking here. The results of the vote will be published on Valentine's day.

An Update
*****
Sad to report the Wildcat was beaten into first place in the poll by the Dingo. So the Scottish wildcat is the world's second most "Favourite Unloved Species" - out of 23 candidates. Not bad! To see the full results please click here.

The Big 5 Revisited
******
Back in 2013, the year of Natural Scotland, we reported on our “Scottish News” page about the survey to find Scotland’s favourite wild animal. The public were asked to choose from the so-called “Big 5”. The winner with nearly 40 per cent of the votes was the Golden Eagle; and yes - a bird is an animal.
*****
We thought that the launch of this new page on the website was a good time to provide some additional information about the Big 5. Please click here to access the full results of the survey and fact sheets for each on the contenders. Sadly the Scottish Wildcat is not included.

Scottish Wildcat Reporting
*****
The Clan has a close association with the Scottish Wildcat - indeed the image of wildcat appears on the Clan crest. Reports on wildcat and its preservation have often appeared on the "Scottish News" pages of this website and in articles in the Clach na Coileach magazine.
*****
We have brought some of these reports and articles together on a special website page which first appeared in the 2015 edition of Clach Extra. We will update that page from time to time.

Ospreys in Perthshire
*****
The pair of Ospreys that nest at the Scottish Wildlife Trust's reserve at Loch of the Lowes near Dunkeld returned in the middle of March from the warmer climes where they spend each winter. The female laid three eggs during the middle of April and three chicks hatched just over a month later. The chicks have grown well and fledged from their nest between the 11th and 18th of July. They now need to build up strength before they make the long journey South at the end of August. The female parent's work is done and she will depart earlier leaving the male to look after the offspring. The young ospreys will only return to Scotland once they reach breeding age.
*****
The chicks have been ringed, but for financial reasons it has been decided not to fit satellite trackers.
*****
Please click here to view a brief calendar of the events in 2016. There is plenty more information about the ospreys on the Loch of Lowes blog.

Red Squirrels in Scotland
*****
'Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels' is a project to stop the decline of Scotland’s core red squirrel populations. Working closely with local communities, the project is seeking to improve conditions for red squirrels across Scotland, and combat the spread of the non-native grey squirrel.
******
As part of the project residents and visitors to Scotland are asked to report sightings of both red and grey squirrels - click here to make a report.
*****
On the same website there is a map of sightings in the current year. Sadly there have to date been no sightings of either red or grey squirrels in the area around the  Clan lands in Glenshee.

They visit the Angus Glens seeking out the ever elusive Scottish Wildcat.

*****

We will not spoil the surprise by reporting their findings here. However the film of their adventures can be viewed on the BBC i-player for the next month by clicking here. Please enjoy.

*****
